A Shining Face, a Full Belly: The Hausa Proverb on the Importance of Contentment
The Hausa proverb “A shining face, goes with a full belly”⁷ teaches us that a happy and contented life comes from having our basic needs met. When we are hungry or thirsty, it is difficult to be happy or focused. But when we have enough to eat and drink, we are better able to enjoy life and live our best selves.
Here are three nuggets of wisdom from this proverb:
1. Contentment is key to happiness. When we are content with what we have, we are less likely to be stressed or anxious.2. Taking care of our basic needs is important for our overall well-being. When we are hungry or thirsty, it is difficult to think clearly or be productive.3. Sharing our blessings with others is a way to show our gratitude and make the world a better place.
